living with less

Published by Ethan Magness at 2:24 pm under BlogWatch

There is a wonderful article that can be read on the website of the Leadership Journal.  In this article by Chad Hall, he writes of his own journey to simplify his life.  I want to write more about this issue and I want to live more of this issue.  But for today I encourage you to read what Chad has written.  Can the church lead in this way?  Should the church lead in this way?

Take a look: Living with Less.

I love the sentiment and have been trying to implement elements of this.
The problem is that living with less can also be vanity. IT can be like the pharisees praying on the street corner.
Notice the popularity of ‘visible’ Prius.
Be simple. but don’t trumpet it.

From Chad’s article “Even though something is commonplace, do we really need it in our lives?”
With that question in mind, all sorts of things were up for grabs: buying a house in the “right” school district, needing two incomes, cell phones, minivans, and even (hold your breath!) signing our kids up for soccer.

Ouch! But these kind of hard-necessary discussions happen better in the intimacy & accountability of real relationships (small groups, mentoring, meaningful peer friendships).

Of course, I paid tens of thousands of dollars more for a townhouse in the school district that had the best test scores and lowest percent of students qualifying for reduced meals (the “right” district). From recent (admittedly 2nd hand) sources, my children’s educational experience in the “wrong” district would have been harder.
